Now, My question is, this rod says it is 12 LB 160 Yards..

This means that a 50 pound strength string would be too much?

And if so can anyone reccommend a rod and reel that can hold 50 pound because most everything in our nearby river is 30+ pounds

I wouldn’t recommend the Black Max reel. Or any of the Abu Garcia “Max” series. 50lb line? It better be BRAID. If you’re wanting to use 50lb mono, then you’ll need a HUGE reel, but since there is a line called “braid”, which is super thin (50lb braid normally has the diameter of 12lb mono (regular line)!) you can easily get a reel to fit a good amount of 50lb braid.

Since there is a lot of 30lb plus fish in your river, I’d recommend something that would hold more line. At least 240-yards of 12lb line. Don’t skimp on quality, either. If you’re wanting a low-profile reel to fish for these big fish, look into the Shimano Curado, 300E. It is $250 retail. But, for me, I’d rather have a round baitcasting reel for big fish. I’d take a look into the ABU Garcia C3, 6500. These are much cheaper, $90 normally.

The C3 6500 is the most inexpensive reel I’d think about getting if I was going after 30lb plus fish. Oh, and look at how the ABU Garcia Black Max is “engineered in Sweden”. These reels are made in China and engineered in Sweden. Look for a Swedish made ABU such as the C3, C4, or Record round reels, or the REVO low-profile reels.
