He doesn’t speak for a moment; I cherish the silence.

I’m mostly happy, I tell him.

I hate noise, I say. Then I tell him
to be good and kind whenever he can.
Anger grips his hairline, pushing
his feathered weave towards the sky.
“Are you serious?”

I used to think about the world
The importance of continuity
Sustaining the planet
Its resources
Being “green”
Now I’m thinking
(In so much simpler terms)
If it should all come to an end …
So what?
We can go on forever
Pretending it’s only September
But November will come
