What should I use to buff an oil-based polyurethane finish coat?
I’ve done my three coats of poly on a large flat sheet of oak. It looks great, but I’m wondering if I should buff it, or just leave it alone. What should I use for buffing? Before the last coat, I tested a section with 0000 steel wool, the finest grade available. It still left small scratches, although I was pushing fairly hard. Should I just do a lighter rub with the 0000 steel wool? Or something else? Or just leave it alone?
It depends on the look you want. Also is it gloss, semigloss or satin?
There are other materials that you can rub varnish with like rottenstone or pumice. Both are in powder form and can be used with water and a soft pad of cotton or felt to get a smoother finish.
I personally use 0000 wool after the second coat and nothing after the third coat.
