Literature reference ?
Hi everyone! I am trying to locate works of contemporary fiction dealing with post-military-discharge life. After completing my tour of duty I poured over the works of Mailer, Lodge, Heller to name but a few, but felt they did not capture life dynamics and transitions after the army. Most works seem to focus either on before or during the draft experience, but not after. Any help with references would be much appreciated.

There’s a short story in The Things They Carried that deals directly with a failed transition. The whole book will be good for you. It’s Tim O’Brien, July July by the same author has a character who’s dealing with survivor’s guilt as well. Not exactly on point with “transition” but relatively close, and a great read if you’re looking for that sort of thing.
Another guy to look out for is Matthew Eck. His first book is actually about war in one regard, but in another the themes of transitioning are very prevalent. He’s the most recent notable veteran to get published.
As for the answer above me – They are on the docket. I’m a writer who shopped around a finished manuscript strictly about transitioning, and was advised to do a serious rewrite because the market is currently flooded with books about the topic. So for all the vets out there waiting, it shouldn’t be too much longer before you start seeing a couple novels dealing with post war/military life hitting the shelves. (I just hope they are actually written by vets so the descriptions are accurate. The last thing we need is more terrible crap like Home of the Brave or Stop Loss out there tainting everything so badly!)
I don’t know if you’re doing market research or just looking for a morale boost, but if it’s market research shoot me an email and I’ll let you know what the JD Agency, and the NE Agency told me was happening in regards to literary war fiction at the moment. If you are just looking for a morale boost I suggest getting those Tim O’Brien books, they’re a little dated but I read them while I was on bed rest after the deployment and a couple of times I thought, “Damn, this guy knows exactly what it’s like.” Also I recommend joining the IAVA, they are starting to do community oriented events and you can hook up with a lot of fellow vets that way.
