Tesla coil windings?
In the constuction of a tesla coil, how can i match a primary and secondary winding by gauge and number of turns. I constructed a coil with a coke bottle capacitor, 15000 v nst, and a sparkgap that are all working. I took a wild guess on winding the coils and have about 200ft of #20 wire on 1′ pvc pipe and six windings of 1/8 inch coppor wire around it. There are no sparks emitting from the toroid although the sparkgap has sparks. How can I match the primary and secondary? Is there a ratio? Does it matter the directions I wind the wire?
A Tesla Coil works with resonance and unlike a conventional transformer, it has nothing to do with the turns ratio between the primary and secondary windings.
The goal is to achieve resonance – balancing inductive reactance and capacitive reactance. You have to tune a Tesla Coil, sort of like a radio.
Your secondary winding is definitely too narrow. 1 inch is too small. You want the diameter to be at least 1.5 – 2 inches. The diameter of the primary winding should be twice the diameter of the secondary. The length of the secondary winding should be about 12 inches. Also, I would suggest using 26 or 28 gauge magnet wire. 20 gauge is too heavy, and you won’t get as many turns in the secondary winding. That will reduce the inductance and will affect the tuning of the entire circuit.
Wind the primary and secondary windings in the same direction. Also, be sure the bottom end of the secondary winding is grounded. Connect it to the white neutral line (wide blade in an outlet) or to the ground line.
If you only have one bottle for your homemade capacitor, that’s probably too small and you don’t have enough capacitance. Try adding more capacitors (more bottles). Put the capacitors in parallel.
