Are you familiar with the Costco Newsletter which details all the special offers available during certain times throughout the year? Many people subscribe to this via email and will gladly look through to see where they can be saving money on their shopping. For you as a retailer this can also be a good way to gauge the sorts of prices that people are willing to pay for items so that you can try and target these same customers.
But with Costco offering such low prices, just how do you compete? The good news is that if you are using a wholesale supplier, you will be able to source your products at the same cost prices as other stores, which means that you are all starting on a level playing field.
The other thing to remember is that even although people see products in the Costco newsletter which may be much cheaper than the prices that you can sell for to make a profit, they usually have to buy items in bulk to get these low prices, and many simply cannot afford to do that. So they are willing to make the sacrifice of paying slightly more to make it affordable for them.
If you do want to take advantage of Costco for your business, then it’s a good idea to source a wholesale supplier that deals in liquidations or closeouts. Big department stores have deals with these companies that allow them to get rid of excess stock to make way for new product lines. The liquidators purchase the excess stock at extremely low prices, and then resell it to their wholesale customers.
So for you as a business, you could find that you are able to buy items at well below wholesale, which means that you may even be able to undersell Costco newsletter prices. Sometimes, stores overstock items because there is not a big enough demand in that geographic area, but if you are selling online or via mail order, you may find that you can get sufficient customers from other areas as you do not face the same location limits as a physical store.
Another issue which is faced is the Costco Return Scam. Many people will buy an item and return it to Costco once it has been used, or they simply no longer want it. Because of such lenient rules to satisfy customers, the Costco return scam is rife, and most of these products are simply on sold to liquidators for next to nothing. If you are in the business of selling second hand goods, or refurbishing products for resale, you can make some great profits by purchasing products from your wholesale supplier that have been part of a Costco return scam.
Whichever way you decide to trade, it’s great to know that you can leverage against big brand names while still providing a great service to your customers. Then maybe the excitement will be all about your specials catalogue arriving in the mail and not just the Costco newsletter!
