ALGEBRA please explain to me im not very smart?
An open box is formed from a square piece of cardboard, by removing squares of side 4 in. from each corner and folding up the sides. If the volume of the carton is then 32 in3, what was the length of a side of the original square of cardboard?
A. 4 + 4√5 inches
B. 4 + 2√2 inches
C. 8 + 4√5 inches
D. 8 + 2√2 inches
Let the length of each side of the original square of cardboard be x inches.
after removing squares of 4 inches from each corner of the cardboard, base area = (x – 8)²
so, volume of the open box so formed = (x – 8)² * 4 = 32
=> (x – 8)² = 8
=> (x – 8)² = (2√2)²
=> (x – 8)² – (2√2)² = 0
=> (x – 8 – 2√2) * ( x – 8 + 2√2) = 0
=> x = 8 + 2√2 OR x = 8 – 2√2 (not possible)
D. (8 + 2√2) inches is correct answer.
