Why do so many Euro-Americans self-righteously tote the line about their ancestors coming her “legally”?
The “proud” progeny of Ellis Island immigrants seem, to me, to be the most notorious at doing this.
Wouldn’t it be pretty difficult for them to swim an entire ocean illegally or smuggle themselves in a cargo ship? Given the geographical luck and proximity of a land border, do you really not think that (during difficult times— famine, WWII, etc) they would have jumped the border, too??
I suppose this question could be amended to include ANY self-righteous group of immigrant people patting themselves on the back for merely doing what they HAD to do, to get to America.
To Kitty’s answer.. I know its “true” that they came here “legally”. My only question is why be so proud of doing something when you (or they, rather) had no other option?
In a day when so many people are coming to American illegally, we should be patting everyone on the back who came here legally, even their ancestors. Euro-American eh, that’s new one….i don’t see it catching on though.
