Why don’t most publishers accept electronic submissions?
I have a web portal for unpublished authors (www.mcarthurbaker.co.uk) and try as I might I cannot get agreement from publishers to accept the odd email showcasing the listings on my site, why is this so?
Do publishers have no thought for the environment or the out of pocket expense of struggling writers. Postage, particularly of heavy manuscripts, can be a costly affair – not to mention environmentally damaging.
Surely it’s high time publishers woke up to the fact that email is so much quicker and cost effective?

I don’t think that it’s because publishers hate the planet, its trees in particular, or are old fuddy-duddies about doing things the way they’ve always done things.
No. It’s that publishers do not need display sites like yours to find fiction they want to buy. Sorry, but that’s the cold hard facts.
Many publishers and agents do indeed accept queries and/or submissions in electronic form (see Writer’s Market in the US or Writers and Artists Yearbook in the UK for specific submission guidelines), but they do not need the odd email from a web portal for unpublished authors to find the manuscripts they want.
I recognize that you’re trying to give a leg up to people hoping to “break in” to publishing, but display sites simply don’t help them, because agents and publishers do not visit them and do not wish to receive email from their owners. They prefer to screen for quality themselves, not have you note the better works at your site.
Sorry, I’m sure this isn’t what you wanted to hear, but it’s the way the industry works.
