Cutter Replacement
My girlfriend is a cutter?
My girlfriend cuts. I try really hard to help her but its hard. I thought it would help if I had side effects that could convince her. Lots of replacements would help too. Stuff that could make her feel better without out hurting herself. I really wanna get her to quit.
Some people cut in an attempt to end their lives. Others cut to relieve emotional pain. Be sure to clarify why she does it. If your girlfriend is trying to relieve emotional pain, you can offer her some alternatives. Distractions that involve “busy hands” might be helpful. Help her think of a hobby, craft, chore, or exercise that she could do instead of cutting. Other options would be replacements to feel that pain such as snapping a rubberband or holding cold ice on her arm. These two alternatives certainly cannot leave permanent damage nor threaten her life as a cut could do. Relaxation exercises might help too when she gets the urge to cut. Deep breathing, a walk, quiet music, or a warm shower can be tried.
Some people have or are taught healthy coping skills. Others struggle because they have never learned them. Let her know that cutting is not OK. In fact, if friends in her circle let her know that they love her and are concerned for her, but will not allow her to cut herself and vow to get a supportive adult involved if she does not stop, that is some positive peer pressure.
Keep in mind, there might be an underlying pain that she has not been able to communicate to anyone. Sometimes if counseling, or a reconciliation, or a listening ear, or some other type of support is given, she may no longer have a need to cut.
