Is this a safe place to store coins?
I have a small sized collection of coins. Most are in folders, but a few are in sealed plastic envelopes from the company I bought them from. I keep my coins in a enclosed bookcase, but it’s almost right next to a window. My question is, is it ok to keep them in a bookcase by a window which, in the nice weather I leave open? Will this in danger my coins? Should I find a new spot for them?
Mylar polyester film is one of the best materials to store coins in, and it is used by the US Mint for all of their coin sets. It is also the lining in 2″x2″ cardboard cards and ‘flips’ used by many collectors to store coins. Do not use PVC plastic. High humidity is probably the most common enemy of coins. The article in the first link contains very much excellent information. Also, many of the old paper folders actually contain acids which will break down most coins over time. I would recommend you ask a local coin expert about this. I hope this helped, and I didn’t get you too paranoid.
