Can I use adhesive sand paper instead of grip tape on my skate board?

I just bought grip tape at sneaker king for 6$. It’s mini logo. My parents were making fun of me because they said that it was just sand paper and that we could buy 10x as much adhesive sand paper for that price. Please let me know if this is possible. Btw is sneaker king a good place to buy griptape?

i dont think you can buy it in the right size even if you could that would were out your shoes and put wholes in them the first or second day you skate it
